Ameroboros

By JOEMUR, July 20, 2017

My painting Ameroboros was created for the RESIST! show at 63 Bluxome Street Gallery in San Francisco, CA. It depicts a serpent made out of the American flag eating its own tail. This piece is in response to the upside down world of American politics we all seem to be living in. If interested you can order a flat print, a framed print, and a T-shirt of the design here–> http://joemur.bigcartel.com

The ouroboros (/ˌjʊərəˈbɒrəs/[2]; /ʊəˈrɒbərəs/[3]; Greek: οὐροβόρος) is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. Originating in Ancient Egyptian iconography, the ouroboros entered western tradition via Greek magical tradition and was adopted as a symbol in Gnosticism and Hermeticism, and most notably in alchemy. Via medieval alchemical tradition, the symbol entered Renaissance magic and modern symbolism, often taken to symbolize introspection, the eternal return or cyclicality,[4] especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself. It also represents the infinite cycle of nature‘s endless creation and destruction, life and death.
